Honoring Janet Yamron

This year’s Carrying the Song Forward auction will honor Janet Yamron, whose decades of dedication have helped shape the choral community in Philadelphia and strengthen Singing City’s mission.

Janet’s connection to Singing City reaches back to the organization’s earliest years. She joined the Soprano 1 section in the 1950s, after being recruited by Singing City’s founder, Elaine Brown, and has remained a vibrant part of the ensemble ever since.  Today, at age 93, Janet continues to sing in the Soprano 1 section, embodying the enduring spirit of Singing City’s community of singers. Over the decades, Janet has also been a leader, advocate, and steadfast supporter of the organization. Through her commitment to choral excellence and community engagement, she has helped sustain the spirit that has defined Singing City since its founding in 1948.

Beyond Singing City, Janet’s influence has extended across Philadelphia’s musical life. Through her work in the School District of Philadelphia and later as Assistant Dean at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance, she inspired generations of choral singers, conductors, and music educators. Many of those students and colleagues have gone on to shape the region’s choral landscape, including singers who have performed with Singing City for decades.

For Janet, choral music has always been about more than performance. It is a way of building connection, empathy, and shared purpose across communities. Her generosity of time, talent, and leadership has touched countless singers and audience members alike.

By honoring Janet this year, we celebrate not only her remarkable contributions, but also the enduring community of singers who continue to carry Singing City’s mission forward.
